This thesis examines the relationship between productivity and mental health in the United Kingdom using longitudinal data from the UKHLS. The empirical evidence shows that individuals’ psychological well‑being is closely linked to both working conditions and family circumstances, and that changes in productivity are associated with significant variations in GHQ scores. Observed productivity, however, is influenced by unmeasured individual factors that weaken its connection with mental health, making it necessary to isolate the truly exogenous component of the production process. By using sectoral information as an external source of variation, the thesis demonstrates that productivity determined by technological and organizational characteristics of economic sectors has a clearer and more substantial impact on psychological well‑being than self‑reported productivity. The results also show that family shocks, such as relationship breakdowns or changes in household structure, are central determinants of mental health, confirming the multidimensional nature of GHQ. Overall, the study shows that the relationship between productivity and mental health is real and structural, and that understanding it requires distinguishing between observed and exogenous variation, offering a more accurate interpretation of how work affects psychological well‑being.

Abstract
Overall, the study shows that the relationship between productivity and mental health is real and structural, and that understanding it requires distinguishing between observed and exogenous variation, offering a more accurate interpretation of how work affects psychological well‑being.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
