This thesis investigates the relationship between rhythmic complexity, musical pleasure, and individual differences, with particular attention to obsessive-compulsive beliefs and personality traits. Rhythmic complexity was measured through Pulse Entropy, an index of the predictability and clarity of the musical pulse. The study involved 261 participants, who listened to 63 musical excerpts from different genres and rated the pleasure they experienced. Participants also completed the Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire and the HEXACO Personality Inventory. Data were analysed using linear mixed-effects models. The results showed a non-linear relationship between Pulse Entropy and musical pleasure. Excerpts with relatively low or moderately low levels of complexity received higher pleasure ratings, whereas greater rhythmic unpredictability was associated with reduced pleasure. Obsessive-compulsive beliefs did not influence musical pleasure in general, but they moderated the response to complexity: higher OBQ scores were associated with a steeper decrease in pleasure as Pulse Entropy increased. This effect remained significant after accounting for HEXACO personality traits. Openness to Experience and musical training were instead associated with greater tolerance of rhythmically complex stimuli. Overall, musical pleasure appears to arise from the interaction between the structural characteristics of music and the listener’s individual cognitive and dispositional features. La presente tesi indaga la relazione tra complessità ritmica, piacere musicale e differenze individuali, con particolare attenzione alle credenze ossessivo-compulsive e ai tratti di personalità. La complessità ritmica è stata misurata attraverso la Pulse Entropy, un indice della prevedibilità e della chiarezza della pulsazione musicale. Lo studio ha coinvolto 261 partecipanti, che hanno ascoltato 63 estratti musicali appartenenti a generi differenti e ne hanno valutato il piacere percepito. Sono stati inoltre somministrati l’Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire e l’HEXACO Personality Inventory. I dati sono stati analizzati mediante modelli lineari misti. In linea con la letteratura, i risultati hanno mostrato una relazione non lineare tra Pulse Entropy e piacere musicale, evidenziando come stimoli moderatamente complessi siano valutati come più piacevoli. Le credenze ossessivo-compulsive non influenzavano il piacere musicale in generale, ma modulavano la risposta alla complessità: partecipanti con punteggi più elevati all’OBQ tendono a preferire stimoli musicali con una complessità ritmica inferiore. Tale effetto rimaneva significativo anche considerando i tratti HEXACO. L’Apertura all’Esperienza e la formazione musicale risultavano invece associate a rating di piacevolezza maggiori verso stimoli musicali con strutture ritmiche più complesse. Nel complesso, il piacere musicale emerge dall’interazione tra caratteristiche dello stimolo e caratteristiche individuali dell’ascoltatore.
