The increasing use of sustainability communication in marketing has intensified consumer interest in environmentally responsible products while also increasing skepticism toward corporate environmental claims. This study examines how benefit framing and claim specificity influence consumer responses to sustainability communication within green marketing. A 2 × 2 within-subject experimental design was conducted in which participants evaluated sustainability messages from a fictional consumer electronics brand. This paper measured purchase intention, brand credibility, brand attitude and perceived greenwashing. The findings revealed that claim specificity significantly influenced all major dependent variables. Specific sustainability claims increased purchase intention, improved brand credibility and brand attitude and reduced perceptions of greenwashing. In contrast, benefit framing produced weak and non-significant effects. Correlation analyses further showed strong positive relationships between credibility, purchase intention and brand attitude, while perceived greenwashing negatively affected positive consumer outcomes. The findings suggest that consumers prioritize credibility, transparency and substantiated sustainability communication over persuasive framing orientation. The paper contributes to green marketing literature by emphasizing the importance of specific and evidence-based environmental claims in reducing consumer skepticism and strengthening consumer trust.
