In recent years, the global multilateral trading system has been challenged by increasing geopolitical tensions that have led to an increase in protectionist trade measures and supply chain restructuring. The US tariff measures implemented by the second Trump Administration in April 2025 represent the most recent and substantial protectionist shock. This thesis analyzes the short-term impact of the recent trade policy shock on bilateral trade flows. It applies a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) regression to real monthly US import values from 14 US trading partners using monthly data from May 2024 to February 2026. Although the US tariffs in 2025 affected all trading partners simultaneously, the findings show heterogeneous short-term import responses across countries with respect to direction and magnitude. Most countries see a substantial decline in real US import values after April 2025, with China being the most-affected country. The empirical results indicate that Vietnam and Thailand are the only countries in the sample for which US import values increase relative to the control group following the trade policy shock. Indicative evidence illustrates that the increase in imports from Vietnam can be partially attributed to transshipment of Chinese goods through Vietnam to the US.

Abstract
Indicative evidence illustrates that the increase in imports from Vietnam can be partially attributed to transshipment of Chinese goods through Vietnam to the US.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
