This study is dedicated to Giovanni Carlo Francesco Reale, a jurist, collector, and curator of the Malaspina Art Gallery, with the aim of exploring his life story and his role in the cultural and artistic context of Pavia during the second half of the nineteenth century. Although his collection is already known through studies of the works that were later incorporated into the collections of the Civic Museums of Pavia, the figure of the collector and the patrimonial and administrative matters related to his bequest remain, in part, under-explored. This research integrates an art-historical perspective with an analysis of archival documents held at the “Carlo Bonetta” Civic Library in Pavia, specifically the “Municipio” collection, Administrative Records, b. 124, file 145, pertaining to the “Case File on the Bequest of Jurist Francesco Reale.” An examination of the sources allows for the reconstruction of Reale’s biographical profile, his relationship with the Malaspina Art Gallery, the circumstances of his death, and the complex succession process through which his private collection was gradually acquired by the city’s institutions. Particular attention is devoted to the holographic will, its amendments, and the provisions regarding the disposition of his estate. A central component of the study is the Art Inventory of the paintings and furniture found in the residence of the late Francesco Reale, compiled by the painter Pietro Michis in March 1892. A comparison of the inventory, museum documentation, and art-historical bibliography makes it possible to reconstruct a significant portion of the collection’s scope and to identify the works that can now be attributed with sufficient certainty to the Reale Collection, while also highlighting the documentary limitations that prevent certain identifications. The research is rounded out by a chronological register of the documentation pertaining to the bequest and an appendix listing the most significant sources. Overall, the study offers a reinterpretation of Reale and his collection as the outcome of a personal and cultural journey closely linked to the history of Pavia’s artistic institutions. The documentary analysis thus provides insight into the specific ways in which a private collection was transformed into public heritage, contributing to our understanding of the dynamics of private collecting and the formation of public cultural heritage in nineteenth-century Pavia.

Abstract
The documentary analysis thus provides insight into the specific ways in which a private collection was transformed into public heritage, contributing to our understanding of the dynamics of private collecting and the formation of public cultural heritage in nineteenth-century Pavia.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
