This Master’s thesis focuses on the solidarity initiatives carried out in the mid-1980s by various Italian political forces and Trade Unions in support of British miners striking against Margaret Thatcher’s government. Specifically, the work centers on the perspectives of the PCI, CGIL, PSI, and the extra-parliamentary left, which took a particular interest in the struggle organized in the United Kingdom by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) led by Arthur Scargill. The first chapter serves as an introduction to the topic. It summarizes, in parallel and in broad strokes, the socio-economic history of Italy and the United Kingdom from the post-WWII period to the mid-1980s, highlighting themes such as the rise and decline of the welfare state, trade union power, the crisis of the 1970s, and the rise of neoliberalism. The second chapter reconstructs the viewpoints of the Italian Communist Party, the CGIL, and two media outlest of the Italian extra-parliamentary left. This section analyzes the coverage provided by l'Unità, Rinascita, Rassegna Sindacale, Quaderni Piacentini, and il manifesto, while also examining the implementation of concrete initiatives, such as fundraising campaigns and the direct delivery of aid (as in the unique case of the CGIL of Parma). The third chapter examines two case studies of solidarity from the Veneto region toward the British miners: the activities of the Padua front (which was socio-politically heterogeneous and included a wide range of parties, unions, and associations ranging from the left wing to the ACLI and certain Catholic parishes) and the actions of the Mestre committee, which was linked to the extra-parliamentary left. The fourth and final chapter addresses the perspective of Craxi’s PSI. Through the pages of Avanti! and Mondoperaio, it highlights the party’s criticism of Thatcher’s management of the strike and its praise for the positions of Neil Kinnock, the Labour leader tied to the party's moderate faction. Both primary sources (newspaper and magazine articles, archival documents, speeches, etc.) and secondary sources (monographs, academic articles, etc.) were utilized to complete this thesis.
