The thesis describes the process of optimisation and characterisation of scintillating detectors for the CHNet-MAXI experiment and for the Super-MuSR, EMU and HiFi spectrometers for muon spin rotation. The experiments are used for muon spectroscopy for material analysis at the ISIS Muon Source, at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, UK. The muon spectrometers at the EC facility at ISIS are used for muon spin rotation and relaxation, techniques used to probe magnetic properties of materials: it is used in chemistry, biology, industry and research in condensed matter, superconductors and semiconductors. Thanks to the ERASMUS+ Traineeship I participated in the optimisation of the Super-MuSR prototype, to be installed in 2027. The prototype was a sector of the spectrometer, which consists of plastic scintillating positron counters read by SiPM pairs. The development involved tests on fibre and SiPM performance, on beam and with a radioactive source, in typical and anomalous magnetic field conditions. I was also tasked with the characterisation of anomalous signals from the EMU and HiFi instruments, noticed after a change to the DAQ system. I confirmed that the anomaly was present before the change, and the problem was identified as helium infiltration in the photodetectors (PMTs). Finally, I participated in the CHNet-MAXI experiment, which is a feasibility study for the lead isotopic analysis using the mu-XES technique. The non-invasive isotopic analysis of historical artefacts enables the identification of the geographical origin of the objects without damage. The experiment uses several detectors: X-ray detectors (HPGe), inorganic scintillators, and a beam monitor based on organic scintillating fibres. I characterised the beam monitor, which is essential for the X-ray spectra normalisation and the measurement of the beam intensity: from the signals, both the muon intensity and the deposited charge were extracted, and it proved able to monitor the beam status and changes to the intensity correlated to changes of the beam parameters.
