This thesis investigates the lexical domain of temperature in a diachronic corpus spanning from Ancient Greek to Post-Classical Greek, with particular attention to the preverbed compounds of the main verbs of heat and cold. The theoretical approach adopted for the analysis of metaphorical uses is that of Cognitive Linguistics, within which the so-called Conceptual Metaphor Theory was developed, together with that of the linguistics of temperature. Within this theoretical framework as a whole, the metaphorical extensions of temperature terms are analyzed as systematic projections between a concrete source domain, that of TEMPERATURE, and more abstract target domains, chief among them that of EMOTIONS. The analysis takes into consideration both the axiological value of the attested metaphorical mappings and their metonymic motivation. The results are organized into a network structured along the scalar organization of the temperature domain, which allows the metaphors associated with the HEAT subdomain to be distinguished from those associated with the COLD subdomain. Particular attention is devoted to the diachronic comparison between Archaic Greek, Classical Greek, and Post-Classical Greek, in order to identify both continuities and innovations in the figurative use of temperature terms, with special regard to the expansion of metaphorical productivity observable in Christian Greek, where the conceptual domains of HEAT and COLD acquire new and systematic spiritual and moral valences.

Abstract
Particular attention is devoted to the diachronic comparison between Archaic Greek, Classical Greek, and Post-Classical Greek, in order to identify both continuities and innovations in the figurative use of temperature terms, with special regard to the expansion of metaphorical productivity observable in Christian Greek, where the conceptual domains of HEAT and COLD acquire new and systematic spiritual and moral valences.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
