This thesis discusses the role that French philosopher Michel Foucault (1926–1984) devotes to the problem of experience in his early works, declining it in the problems of the transcendental, anthropology and phenomenology. Through an analysis of new writings from the Fonds Foucault at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, published between 2021 and 2025, the thesis demonstrates how the problem of negativity, the question of how to account for experience in order to communicate it as it is given to the world, runs throughout the young Foucault's work and contributes to a new and deeper reading of the origins of his philosophical project. The first part will focus on the mémoire for the Diplôme d'études supérieures (DES) that the twenty-two-year-old took at the Sorbonne on June 11, 1949, which focused on the constitution of the historical transcendental in G. W. F. Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. Subsequently, other manuscripts that the young Foucault chose not to publish will be examined. These also focus on the question of the status of the subject and of knowledge in relation to experience, where the philosopher sought new methods for communicating human experience in terms of its being-in-the-world. This issue led him to engage with numerous philosophical currents and diverse influences, such as French epistemology, phenomenology, and phenomenological psychiatry, in the pursuit of a philosophical project that could incorporate historical analysis and critical theory within the framework of a transcendental immanentism, inspired by the phenomenological epoché. This thesis will therefore contextualize the analysis of these writings within the philosophical and psychological landscape of the time, as well as highlight the connections and possibilities that the analysis of these early works can have for shedding new light on the later and more well-known texts of Michel Foucault's archaeological-genealogical project.
