The banking sector has undergone a radical transformation over the centuries, evolving from a simple depository institution to a complex financial system that has an impact on the global economy. This thesis examines the historical path of the banking sector from antiquity to the present day, with a focus on the impact of digitisation and social media marketing on the banking sector. Through a detailed analysis, it explores the financial crises that have shaped the banking landscape, with a particular focus on the 2008 crisis and its impact on the Italian banking system. It analyses how trust and the bank-customer relationship relationship was tested and how banks had to adapt to survive in an increasingly adapt to survive in an increasingly digitised world. The thesis argues how new technologies offer new opportunities for customer engagement and value creation in the age of digital banking. Il settore bancario ha subito una radicale trasformazione nel corso dei secoli, evolvendo da semplice istituto di deposito a un complesso sistema finanziario che ha un impatto sull'economia globale. Questo tesi esamina il percorso storico del settore bancario dall'antichità ai giorni nostri, con particolare attenzione all'impatto della digitalizzazione e del social media marketing sul settore bancario. Attraverso un'analisi dettagliata, esplora le crisi finanziarie che hanno plasmato il panorama bancario, con particolare attenzione riguardo la crisi del 2008 e il suo impatto sul sistema bancario italiano. Si analizza come la fiducia e il rapporto banca-cliente siano stati messi alla prova e come le banche abbiano dovuto adattarsi per sopravvivere in un mondo sempre più digitalizzato. La tesi argomenta come le nuove tecnologie offrano nuove opportunità di engagement dei clienti e di creazione di valore nell'era del digital banking. Si valuta inoltre l'efficacia del social media marketing come strumento per le banche per comunicare con i clienti e costruire relazioni durature. Infine, discute le sfide e le opportunità che la digitalizzazione continua a portare e delinea il futuro del settore bancario.
