The title of the thesis is “Estimating Risk Premia with Omitted Factors: evidence from European markets”. The objective is to investigate the omitted variables bias which affects the risk premia estimators in asset pricing. There are several methods to estimate the risk premia such as the Fama-MacBeth regression and the mimicking portfolio, but they are affected by the issue of potential omitted variables bias. Giglio and Xiu proposed a solution using the three-pass procedure that extends the two-pass procedure and the mimicking portfolio approach with a PC-augmented cross-sectional regression. The study proposed by Giglio and Xiu is entirely conducted on data from North America and of consequently it considers only the American economic context. With this thesis, we extended the analysis to a European context by considering 25 portfolios sorted on size and book-to-market, and three Fama-French factors (Mkt-Rf, SMB and HML), and we covered a period of 428 months from July 1990 to February 2026. The empirical analysis used seven latent factors (p̂ = 7) extracted with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The analysis applies the three-pass procedure and leads to the estimation of the risk premia of the factors. The results of the analysis were then compared to those obtained by Giglio and Xiu and with those obtained with the Fama-MacBeth method. In conclusion, the analysis allowed us to identify the significant factor in the risk premia estimation with omitted variables in the European context.
