Scarcity-based marketing is used to stimulate demand and accelerate consumers’ purchase decisions (Aggarwal et al., 2013; Ladeira et al., 2023). Whether demand-induced or supply-induced, scarcity creates urgency and increases a product’s perceived value and desirability (Lynn, 1991; Cialdini, 2009; Goldsmith et al., 2020; Hamilton et al., 2019). However, it may also generate negative emotions such as frustration and anger (Kristofferson et al., 2017; Biraglia et al., 2021) and, when perceived as manipulative, can damage brand trust (Voigt et al., 2021; Aggarwal et al., 2011). While previous research has mainly focused on objective results, the emotional responses triggered by scarcity and their implications for interpersonal and consumer-brand relationships remain underexplored. This study therefore aimed to understand to what extent scarcity induces negative emotions and reactions among consumers, and how it affects relationships with other consumers and with the brand. To address this question, a qualitative approach was adopted based on twelve semi- structured interviews analyzed through thematic analysis using NVivo. The findings confirm that scarcity generates negative emotions, including frustration, disappointment, anger, and worry, while also inducing positive emotions such as excitement and motivation, particularly at the beginning of the purchasing process. Depending on the nature of the scarce object and the scarcity itself, it can accelerate purchase decisions or purchase execution. Scarcity alone does not appear sufficient to generate interconsumer conflict, partly due to the online context of most situations. Finally, the consumer-brand relationship reveals three distinct positions: reinforced trust, distance, and mistrust. The impact of scarcity on the consumer-brand relationship therefore lies in a spectrum shaped by how responsibility for the negative experience is attributed and by whether the outcome met expectations.
