In this thesis, we study structural instability in large-dimensional factor models. We use the Russian stock market as an empirical application. The main objective of the thesis is to examine whether the factor structure of Russian stock returns remained stable over 2021--2025, or whether the data indicate a break in the factor loading matrix. The analysis is based on principal component estimation, the Bai--Ng criteria for factor selection, and a likelihood ratio test for structural change in factor models. Before proceeding to the real data, the procedure was tested on artificially generated data, where the true break date was known. After the procedure showed satisfactory results on the simulated data, we applied it to a balanced panel of weekly returns of Russian stocks. The test indicates a statistically significant break in mid-February 2024. A comparison between the subsamples before and after the estimated break date suggests that the factor structure changed. Overall, the results show that a single stable factor model is too restrictive for the Russian stock market over the period considered.

Abstract

Testing Structural Changes in Large-Dimensional Factor Models: An Application to Russian Stock Market Data
