The thesis presents an efficient methodology for calibrating the Heston and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic volatility models to quoted European option prices based on the analytical gradient of the characteristic function. The methodology is tested on both real and simulated data. The contributions of this thesis can be summarized as follows. First, I identify an identifiability issue related to the mean-reversion rate and long-term variance parameters of the Heston model. Second, to overcome this issue, I propose a reparameterization of the Heston model that ensures greater stability of the optimal solution, reduces the number of calibration failures on real-world data, and achieves calibration speeds almost ten times faster than those of the original algorithm. Third, I show that the same identifiability issue does not arise in the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model. The result is that the model is easier to calibrate and the proposed algorithm consistently finds the global optimum on real data, even without reparameterization. Finally, building on these findings, I propose a model selection procedure that ensures successful calibration on every day in the sample.

Abstract
Finally, building on these findings, I propose a model selection procedure that ensures successful calibration on every day in the sample.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
