This thesis examines how firms translate AI-related readiness into broader organizational outcomes and how this relationship is shaped by AI capability and governance. While artificial intelligence is widely associated with gains in efficiency, innovation, and strategic adaptability, many organizations still struggle to move beyond isolated experimentation toward forms of AI use that create stable and measurable value. Against this background, the study addresses the following research question: How does AI readiness influence firm innovativeness and firm performance, and to what extent is this relationship strengthened by AI capability and governance? To answer this question, the thesis combines a systematic literature review with an empirical analysis of survey data. The literature review synthesizes current research on AI governance, AI capability, readiness, diffusion, performance, innovation, and related risks, and develops an integrated conceptual framework. Building on this framework, the empirical analysis uses a large organizational survey dataset to test direct and moderating relationships between the central constructs. The findings show that AI readiness is positively associated with both firm innovativeness and firm performance. At the same time, the results demonstrate that these effects are contingent on organizational context. More specifically, AI capability and governance strengthen the positive relationship between AI readiness and both outcome variables. For firm innovativeness, the effect of AI readiness remains positive across different levels of AI capability and governance, but becomes stronger when such support structures are more developed. For firm performance, the results indicate a threshold effect, suggesting that AI readiness alone is not sufficient to generate stronger performance outcomes when governance and organizational support are weak. The thesis contributes to the literature by showing that the organizational value of AI depends not on adoption alone, but on the extent to which AI-related knowledge and preparedness are embedded in supportive organizational structures. It thereby reinforces the view that AI-related competitive value emerges through capability building, governance, and institutionalization rather than through technology in isolation. In practical terms, the findings suggest that firms seeking to benefit from AI should focus not only on AI exposure and expertise, but also on developing the organizational mechanisms required to coordinate, support, and scale AI effectively Keywords: artificial intelligence, AI readiness, AI capability, AI governance, firm innovativeness, firm performance, organizational outcomes, AI scaling
