The aim of this research is to assess the role of illegal oil trade in financing the activities of territory-controlling terrorist organizations, especially focusing on the leading case represented by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. After introducing the phenomenon of terrorism in the West Asia region and its different manifestations as various categories of terrorist organizations, this work focuses on all the most significant possible methods of terrorism financing, before focusing on the Islamic State and illegal oil trade. ISIS is depicted as a one-of-a-kind terrorist organization able to achieve an unprecedented level of territorial control and therefore to take advantage of sources of funding never available to any other terrorist group before, among which the most interesting is regarded to be illegal oil trade, which has brought to the Islamic State an estimate of 600 million USD per year during its period of peak activity. In conclusion, this work frames the relationship between terrorism and the oil market in the context of geopolitical risk, describing how terrorist attacks can move crude barrel prices, and advancing the hypothesis that ISIS could have voluntarily exploited this mechanism to grow its financial wealth.

Abstract
In conclusion, this work frames the relationship between terrorism and the oil market in the context of geopolitical risk, describing how terrorist attacks can move crude barrel prices, and advancing the hypothesis that ISIS could have voluntarily exploited this mechanism to grow its financial wealth.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
