Quercetin is a flavonol with marked pharmacological activity of various kinds, whose therapeutic use is limited by its poor water solubility, low bioavailability and reduced chemical stability. To improve these characteristics, in this thesis delivery systems based on chitosan hydrogels containing halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were developed, following a literature protocol that employed medium molecular weight chitosan. In the present work, three different molecular weights of this polymer were compared: low (LMW, here BP), medium (MP) and high (AP). g-C3N4 was synthesized in the laboratory by thermal polycondensation of dicyandiamide at 550 °C under an inert atmosphere. In the hydrogels, the presence of HNT was detected to different extents depending on the technique and the molecular weight: the results suggest that the dispersion of the nanotubes within the polymer network depends on the length of the chitosan chains. For g-C3N4, on the other hand, the techniques used did not allow its presence in the final systems to be confirmed, and this aspect remains to be clarified. With the addition of quercetin, molecular weight-dependent effects were observed; overall, the results indicate that the molecular weight of chitosan modulates the structure and thermal properties of the hydrogels, as well as their interaction with HNT and quercetin. Moreover, none of the analytical techniques used, when their respective results are considered individually, is sufficient for a meaningful characterization. Future developments include morphological studies (SEM/TEM), to verify the dispersion of the nanotubes and the presence of g-C3N4, as well as controlled release studies of quercetin.

Abstract
Quercetin is a flavonol with marked pharmacological activity of various kinds, whose therapeutic use is limited by its poor water solubility, low bioavailability and reduced chemical stability.
