One of Italy's most pressing current challenges concerns the production of domestic energy (generated within Italian territory). Following the abandonment of nuclear power, the country has become heavily dependent on foreign imports to meet its energy needs, and shifting geopolitical landscapes have highlighted the vulnerability this creates. In this context, the use of renewable energy sources emerges as a key strategic response to boost national energy independence. This thesis focuses specifically on the potential of onshore wind power within Italy’s energy mix and on repowering initiatives. By consulting the RSE Wind Atlas to assess wind resources in Italy and developing a SWOT matrix, the Campidano region in Sardinia was identified as a suitable macro-area, owing to both its high wind energy potential and its compatibility with territorial and environmental constraints. The study focuses on optimizing and repowering an existing wind farm, analyzing the critical issues identified in the Environmental Impact Assessment of the original 68-turbine layout. Based on these findings, a new design solution was developed, featuring an optimized layout reconfiguration that utilizes 2 MW Vestas V90 wind turbines and establishes appropriate spacing criteria. The project was then evaluated through three fundamental levels of analysis: 1. Estimation of annual energy production: calculated using the "bin-by-bin" method, the results indicated a net energy output capable of meeting a significant portion of local energy demand; 2. Technical-structural assessment: geometric and dimensional characterization of the wind turbine components, using finite element modeling (FEM); 3. Cost and life-cycle estimation: economic-financial analysis of the investment and profitability assessment over the plant's entire life cycle. The study demonstrates how a repowering project within the country can be technically, environmentally, and economically sustainable.
