Electrical discharges in triple-Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors can lead to permanent short circuits, altering the high-voltage distribution and potentially compromising detector performance. This issue also affects the GEM detectors installed in the muon system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This thesis investigates the impact of such defects on detection efficiency through laboratory measurements performed with a small-scale triple-GEM detector, in which the electrical effects of short circuits are reproduced by controlled variations of the applied voltages. The effects of voltage variations across individual GEM foils and gas gaps, as well as configurations involving multiple affected foils, are systematically characterized, revealing a different sensitivity of the detector efficiency to the voltage applied across each foil. These results provide an experimental basis for understanding the consequences of short circuits on triple-GEM detector performance and their implications for the operation of GEM detectors in CMS.

Abstract
These results provide an experimental basis for understanding the consequences of short circuits on triple-GEM detector performance and their implications for the operation of GEM detectors in CMS.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
