This thesis explores the classical problem of counting the 27 lines on a smooth cubic surface in \mathbb{P}^3 using three different algebraic and geometric perspectives. In the first chapter, we introduce the geometric foundations of the problem. By studying the Fano scheme of lines, we prove that a general cubic surface over an algebraically closed field contains a non-empty, finite set of lines. In the second chapter, we determine the exact number of lines using intersection theory. We compute this number by setting up an intersection problem on the Grassmannian G(2,4), through Chern classes and Schubert cycles to calculate the zero locus of a section of a suitable vector bundle. Finally, in the third chapter, we analyze the configuration of these lines from a birational point of view. We describe the cubic surface as the blow-up of \mathbb{P}^2 at six general points, examine the geometry of the exceptional divisors, and discuss some applications using the Grothendieck ring.

Abstract

Enumerative geometry of cubic surfaces: three views on the 27 lines.
