The aim of this thesis is to give an overview of the automorphism groups of compact Riemann surfaces of genus g greater than or equal to two. We begin by defining Weierstrass points, which are then used to prove that the auto- morphism group is finite and that the number of automorphisms is bounded by 84(g −1), as stated in Hurwitz’s theorem. We then introduce the representation of the automorphism group on the space of holomorphic 1-forms. The study of this representation culminates in the Eichler trace formula, which gives a formula for the trace of an automorphism in terms of coefficients which depend on the local behaviour of the automorphism near its fixed points. As a conse- quence of the Eichler trace formula, we prove the Chevalley-Weil formula, which provides a method for calculating the multiplicity of an irreducible character in the representation. The last section is dedicated to studying when the bound established by Hurwitz theorem is attained. In particular, we see an example of a surface of genus three whose automorphism group has 168 elements. Starting from it, we show that this bound is attained by surfaces of infinitely many genera.
