“THE “TRUMP” EFFECT ON TRADE” Assessing Presidential Trade Agenda and State of Play with U.S Major Trading Partners

This thesis aims to assess President Trump’s trade agenda, with particular reference to the electoral campaign that led to his election, to the its commercial objectives and to the renegotiation of free trade agreements. Contextualizing the President's political and economic position, the roots of protectionism and the implications on commercial flow with major US trading partners are underlined and evaluated. The state of play with Canada, Mexico (members of NAFTA), China and Europe are analysed from the point of view of commercial policy, evaluating the initiatives that have been undertaken by the president and the tensions these aggressive actions have brought. The trade deficit dynamic, whose recovery was the bulwark of President Trump political campaign, is statistically analysed for the Pre-Trump and Post-Trump period, along with import-export flows, with a focus on the categories that have been most oppressed by protectionist policy adopted by Trump. In the conclusions, future developments and escalations from commercial tension are projected, in the light of the most recent literature studies.

Questa tesi si propone come obiettivo quello di valutare l'agenda commerciale del Presidente Trump, con un particolare riferimento alla campagna elettorale che ha portato alla sua elezione, agli obiettivi commerciali e agli accordi di libero mercato. Contestualizzando la posizione politica- economica del Presidente, si cercano di trovare le radici del protezionismo e le implicazioni sul flusso commerciale con i maggiori partner commerciali statunitensi. Lo state of play con Canada, Messico (membri del NAFTA), Cina ed Europa è analizzato dal punto di vista della politica commerciale, valutando le iniziative che sono state intrapresa dal Presidente e le tensioni conseguenti. La dinamica del trade deficit, il cui risanamento è stato il baluardo della politica Trumpiana, è analizzata statisticamente per gli anni Pre-Trump e Post-Trump, insieme all'import- export, con focus sulle categorie che sono state maggiormente vessate dalla politica protezionistica adottata da Trump. Nelle conclusioni, futuri sviluppi ed escalations dalla tensione commerciale vengono proiettati, alla luce degli studi più recenti della letteratura.
