Lean Manufacturing and Industry 4.0: The Factory Excellence Project in Monier S.r.l.

The subject of this thesis is the concept of Lean Manufacturing including all the tools it has brought to improve industrial processes, with an overview of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its relationship with Lean Manufacturing. This thesis shows the general and theoretical aspects of Lean Manufacturing and Industry 4.0, especially the implementation of both these strategies in a corporate context, where the candidate took part in a one-year long internship, analysing in detail how to operate a system dealing with the production of tiles. The focus is on the so-called Factory Excellence Project started in 2016 in Monier S.r.l. at the plant of Castelletto di Branduzzo. The FE project regards the introduction of the most appropriate Lean tools inside a completely automated plant and some of the most recent technologies offered by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. An analysis of the results obtained is carried out in order to show if the implementation of these management strategies can bring significant benefits to the organization, workers and customers, or if they are a total failure.

L'argomento di questa tesi è il concetto di Lean Manufacturing che include tutti gli strumenti che ha portato a migliorare i processi industriali, con una panoramica della Quarta Rivoluzione Industriale e del suo rapporto con Lean Manufacturing. Questa tesi mostra gli aspetti generali e teorici della Lean Manufacturing e dell’Industria 4.0, in particolare l'implementazione di entrambe queste strategie in un contesto aziendale, in cui il candidato ha partecipato a un tirocinio di un anno, analizzando in dettaglio come gestire un sistema che si occupa della produzione di tegole. L'attenzione si concentra sul cosiddetto Progetto Factory Excellence avviato nel 2016 in Monier S.r.l. nello stabilimento di Castelletto di Branduzzo. Il progetto FE riguarda l'introduzione degli strumenti Lean più appropriati all'interno di un impianto completamente automatizzato e alcune delle più recenti tecnologie offerte dalla Quarta Rivoluzione Industriale. Un'analisi dei risultati ottenuti viene effettuata al fine di dimostrare se l'implementazione di queste strategie di gestione può apportare benefici significativi all'organizzazione, ai lavoratori e ai clienti, o se si tratta di un fallimento totale.
