Abstract This thesis investigates the potential links between experiences of indigenous autonomy and the protection of human rights, using Mexico as a case study. The main goal of the thesis is to contribute towards the development of practical tools for enhancing the conditions of life in indigenous communities, regarding basic human rights. This is done by answering the research question “Could indigenous autonomy be a potential instrument for protection of human rights of the Indigenous Peoples?”. The thesis seeks to explore the fundamental discussions underlying the proposed question. To understand indigenous autonomy, it is proposed a conceptual approach to indigenous autonomy based on the normative concepts of autonomy, individual/collective rights, multiculturalism and political identities, and their place within the international human rights framework. Further, the thesis will approach paradigmatic experiences of indigenous autonomy that have been taking place in contemporary Mexico, and their origins – in order to draw conclusions on their relevance on a wider perspective, pointing to the potential effective protection of human rights of indigenous populations in general. Keywords: Indigenous Autonomy, Collective Rights, self-determination, Multiculturalism, Identity, Human Rights, Mexico.
