Virtual reality in healthcare: an analysis of its potential and limitations in training

Virtual reality (VR) can be considered like one of the most promising technology of our time. Back in vogue recently, it showed to be a very useful instruments for the most disparate sec-tors. The main purpose of this thesis is to show how this technology can impact in a sector like healthcare, in the specific field of training. To achieve this goal is necessary to answer to the following research question: "What are the potentials and limits of virtual reality applied to healthcare in training?". Using the systematic review, it was possible to analyse and select the articles necessary to answer this question, highlighting the most relevant factors of this topic. The first chapter of the thesis presents an overview of VR, in particular some of the most significant definitions, the evolution during the years and the several possibilities of appli-cation. The second chapter is dedicated to the application of VR in the healthcare field, divided in its two macro-sectors: training and therapy and rehabilitation, and to the research question identification. The third chapter describes the methodology used to obtain the articles necessary for the analysis, resulting from the inclusion and exclusion criteria used. The fourth chapter enunciates the results obtained from the selected articles, following a specific classification system. The fifth chapter enters into the discussion, in which the main topic of the thesis, potentials and limitations in healthcare training, is explained in detail; additionally, some interesting insights about the future research are provided.

La realtà virtuale può essere considerata come una delle tecnologie più promettenti del no-stro tempo. Ritornata di moda recentemente, ha mostrato di essere uno strumento molto utile per i setto-ri più disparati. Lo scopo principale di questa tesi è mostrare come questa tecnologia può impattare in un settore come quello dell’assistenza sanitaria, nello specifico campo della formazione. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo è necessario rispondere alla seguente domanda di ricerca: “Quali sono le potenzialità e i limiti della realtà virtuale applicata alla formazione nell’assistenza sanitaria?”. Usando la revisione sistematica è stato possibile analizzare e selezionare gli articoli neces-sari per rispondere a questo quesito, evidenziando i fattori più rilevanti per l’argomento. Il primo capitolo di questa tesi presenta una panoramica della realtà virtuale, in particolare alcune delle definizioni più significative, l’evoluzione nel corso degli anni e le diverse pos-sibilità di applicazione. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato all’applicazione della realtà virtuale nel campo sanitario, di-viso nei suoi due macro-settori: formazione e terapia e riabilitazione, e all’identificazione della domanda di ricerca. Il terzo capitolo descrive la metodologia usata per ottenere gli articoli necessari per l’analisi, risultanti dai criteri di inclusione ed esclusione utilizzati. Il quarto capitolo enuncia i risultati ottenuti dagli articoli selezionati, seguendo uno specifi-co sistema di classificazione. Il quinto capitolo intavola la discussione, nella quale l’argomento principale, le potenzialità e i limiti nella formazione sanitaria, sono spiegati nel dettaglio; inoltre vengono forniti al-cuni interessanti spunti per le ricerche future.
