The aim of this thesis is to investigate the realization of grammatical gender in the core IE languages, by looking at nouns associated to the concepts of two semantic fields (ANIMALS and BODY PARTS) of the Swadesh100 list, in order to understand their mechanisms of gender-assignment in detail, from the perspective of PIE. The scholarship in PIE grammatical gender is very vast, but a systematic work on the Swa-desh100 list from the point of view of gender in PIE has not been done yet, therefore this thesis is a pioneering work in this field. The approach of this study is firstly based on empirical data, following traditional studies in PIE phonology and morphology, but also on some important perspectives discussed mainly in Cognitive Linguistics, especially with regard to semantics.
