In “On a certain Blindness in Human Beings”, William James argues that the observer cannot grasp the whole of the subject’s experience. This may well be, but the subject’s experience is created through a system of shared embodied dynamic practices. In the field of Art, the observers may not grasp the artist’s intentions fully, but by interacting with the artwork, can create new shared systems. Basing myself on Alva Noe’s “Strange Tools” and concepts of embodied and extended mind, I provide a case study to explore these ideas practically, in the form of an art project entitled “The Ship of Fools”.

Abstract

In “On a certain Blindness in Human Beings”, William James argues that the observer cannot grasp the whole of the subject’s experience. This may well be, but the subject’s experience is created through a system of shared embodied dynamic practices. In the field of Art, the observers may not grasp the artist’s intentions fully, but by interacting with the artwork, can create new shared systems. Basing myself on Alva Noe’s “Strange Tools” and concepts of embodied and extended mind, I provide a case study to explore these ideas practically, in the form of an art project entitled “The Ship of Fools”.

ART AND MIND: Improvisations Beyond the Blindness of Human Understanding
In “On a certain Blindness in Human Beings”, William James argues that the observer cannot grasp the whole of the subject’s experience. This may well be, but the subject’s experience is created through a system of shared embodied dynamic practices. In the field of Art, the observers may not grasp the artist’s intentions fully, but by interacting with the artwork, can create new shared systems. Basing myself on Alva Noe’s “Strange Tools” and concepts of embodied and extended mind, I provide a case study to explore these ideas practically, in the form of an art project entitled “The Ship of Fools”.
