COMPARING TWO EXPLANATIONS OF THE OUTBREAK OF WAR THEORIES AND CASE STUDIES

The main goal of this thesis is the comparison of two specific theories dealing with the conditions standing behind the outbreak of major wars. One was developed by Stephen Van Evera and consists of five hypothesis about likeliness of the outbreak, the second, dynamic differentials theory, was written by Dale C. Copeland and its main focus is the power differentials and polarity of the international system, with focus on declining states. After briefly introducing both theories and applying them to the World War I case, the thesis explores similarities and differences in five specific points. Namely the formal features, actors’ expectations of outcomes of the war, power shifts and preventive war, resources and arms racing. The thesis finds that the theories both reach their explanatory goals and that although they focus on rather different points, they are compatible and can be used simultaneously to supplement one another.

L'obiettivo principale di questa tesi è il confronto fra due specifiche teorie che riguardano le condizioni che stanno dietro lo scoppio di grandi guerre. Una è stata sviluppata da Stephen Van Evera e si compone di cinque ipotesi sulla probabilità dello scoppio; la seconda, la teoria dei differenziali dinamici, fu scritta da Dale C. Copeland e si concentra principalmente sui differenziali di potere e la polarità del sistema internazionale, focalizzandosi sugli stati decrescenti. Dopo una breve introduzione su entrambe le teorie e l'applicazione delle stesse al caso della prima guerra mondiale, la tesi esplora somiglianze e differenze in cinque punti specifici: le caratteristiche formali, le aspettative dei partecipanti sugli esiti della guerra, i cambi di potere e la guerra preventiva, le risorse, la corsa alle armi. La tesi conclude che entrambe le teorie raggiungono i propri obiettivi esplicativi e che, sebbene si focalizzino su punti piuttosto differenti, sono compatibili e possono essere usate simultaneamente per integrarsi l'una con l'altra.
