Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Italian Electricity and Gas Demand

Electricity and Natural gas demand are usually affected by many endogenous and exogenous factors to which the generation system must accordingly respond through utility operators. Lockdown measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 imposed by many countries have led to sudden changes in socioeconomic habits which have had direct effects on the electricity and natural gas systems. This work tries to analyse econometrically the influence that the pandemic may have had on both energies consumption, investigating if the pandemic had only temporary effects or provoked a structural change in the consumptions.

La domanda di gas naturale ed elettricità sono solitamente influenzate da fattori endogeni ed esogeni, ai quali il sistema produttivo di entrambe deve adattarsi. Le misure di lockdown imposte dal governo hanno fatto si che molte abitudini socioculturali venissero stravolte, le quali hanno avuto una ripercussione sul comparto elettrico e del gas naturale. Il lavoro in questione tenta di presentare gli effetti della pandemia su entrambe le domande, investigando se lo shock causato dalla pandemia abbia avuto effetto solamente nel breve-medio periodo, oppure se ha causato un cambio strutturale su entrambe le domande.
