The dissertation deals with the topic of foreign direct investments, which represents an increasing phenomenon in the world economy. The importance of FDI is confirmed by the comparison with GDP’s growth: from nineties to 2015 world GDP has tripled, while on the other hand, FDI has increased ten times. The aim of the study is investigating the most attractive factors of FDI from a literature point of view, and then verifying if the academic statements and the analysis conducted by researchers find a confirmation in the real world. In order to do so, we focused the first chapter of the dissertation on describing the FDI scenario from different perspectives according to official reports and statistics: the study has been analysed both from a geographical and from a sectoral point of view: the two aspects have been described using an approach along years and defining the distribution of the situation nowadays. Moreover, the first chapter reports a detailed analysis about the most attractive determinants of FDI and an explanation about the main indexes to look at in order to examine practical cases. The second chapter is focused on a study of an empirical sample of Italian firms: we analysed a database from Osiris which contains 165 Italian companies and their foreign direct investments all over the world. Thanks to the use of some tools, we used the data available in order to obtain clear results which we could consider useful to verify the literature statements reported at the beginning of the study. The third part of the dissertation is dedicated to a comparison of the first two sessions: the aim of this chapter is putting in parallel, from one side the literature point of view, and from the other the outcomes obtained by the analysis of the Italian sample, underling the discrepancies which emerged. In the last section of the third chapter we summed up the results of the comparison, stressing the points in common and the dissimilarities between the literature point of view and the Osiris database, giving an interpretation to the to the final considerations.
