Demonstratives in fictive dialogue. A contrastive and comparative analysis of Matthew Quick’s “The Silver Linings Playbook” (2008) and its filmic adaptation.

This thesis concerns a contrastive and comparative analysis the of a corpus of 400 English demonstrative pronouns and determiners sampled from the novel “The Silver Linings Playbook” (2008) written by Matthew Quick and from its filmic adaptation “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012) directed by David O. Russell. The demonstratives sampled have been analysed according to their pragmatic and syntactic functions and the strategies adopted for their translation into Italian. This study aims at understanding whether the syntactic and pragmatic characteristics of the demonstratives analysed and the medium through which they are conveyed play a significant role in translation.

Questo lavoro consiste in un’analisi contrastiva e comparativa di un corpus di 400 pronomi e aggettivi dimostrativi presi dal libro “The Silver Linings Playbook” (2008) di Matthew Quick e dal suo adattamento cinematografico “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012) diretto da David O. Russell I dimostrativi in oggetto sono stati analizzati prendendo in considerazione le loro funzioni ed i loro ruoli sintattici e pragmatici nonché le strategie utilizzate per la loro traduzione in italiano. L’analisi condotta ha lo scopo di capire se gli aspetti sintattici, pragmatici o il mezzo di comunicazione utilizzato abbiano un ruolo significativo nella traduzione dei dimostrativi.
