Costantino Nivola was an Italian artist born in Sardegna in 1911. His trained takes place in the modern Milan of the Thirties, a very sophisticated ambience, where he got his first job as designer for Olivetti firm during 1936. His maturity is in the best metropolis in the world: New York, where his artistic personality grows up to mature highly creative results, while the New York avant-garde goes towards informal painting, Nivola already talks about synthesis of the arts - the union between art and architecture - and public art as a socialization tool. In this research different topics will be discuss on what was the artistic career of Costantino Nivola, above all we will analyse his artistic formation, the epiphany meeting with Le Corbusier, the sand casting technique and the relationship between architecture and art. Lastly as regards public projects, we will see how Nivola establishes the development of an architectural and spatial sensitivity, through his sculpture create specially for buildings, piazze and high school or university. We will analyses projects that are still present in America and Italy and projects that have never been completed, examining the social importance that these works of art have or they must have had.
Costantino Nivola è stato un artista italiano nato in Sardegna nel 1911. La sua formazione avviene nella moderna Milano degli anni Trenta, un ambiente molto sofisticato, dove ottiene il suo primo lavoro come grafico per la Olivetti nel 1936. La sua maturità invece è nella metropoli per eccellenza, New York, dove la sua personalità artistica cresce fino a maturare risultati fortemente creativi: mentre l’avanguardia newyorkese si indirizza sulla pittura informale, Nivola parla già di sintesi delle arti – l’unione tra arte e architettura – e dell’arte pubblica come strumento di socializzazione. Questa ricerca si propone di affrontare i diversi aspetti della carriera artistica di Costantino Nivola, analizzando in particolar modo la sua formazione, l’incontro-epifania con Le Corbusier, la tecnica del sand casting e il rapporto architettura-arte. Infine, per quanto riguarda i progetti pubblici, saranno oggetto di studio le modalità con cui Nivola consegue lo sviluppo di una nuova sensibilità architettonica e spaziale, creando sculture per edifici pubblici, piazze e scuole. Si analizzeranno progetti tutt’ora presenti in America e in Italia, e i progetti mai portati a termine, esaminando l’importanza sociale che queste opere d’arte hanno o avrebbero dovuto avere.
