Abstract
Today, the social changes and new needs have created a number of new dependencies, which can produce very relevant effects. The New Addiction, i.e. "Addiction without substance" includes a range of daily behaviors that may develop pathological features: pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, sex addiction, workaholism or so-called "Internet Addiction" (Cybersex, cyber-relationships, net gaming, information overload or from social networks). On this paper we will focus on the Social Networking Sites (SNS), virtual communities where users can create public profiles in order to interact and shares the same interests with friends and other users. Now the use of these sites has remarkably increased as to be considered a global phenomenon. However, some people are so unable to take control on their use to develop a real addiction (SNA: Social Network Addiction), which can, eventually, ruin their relationships and their mental health. Whereas the contemporary scientific studies of SNA are considerably limited, this analysis aims to highlight this emerging uneasiness and its related risk factors, causes, involved personalities, negative consequences, comorbidity, connecting with other mental disorders and the treatment of those who abuse of these sites (SNS), in particular Facebook. Some research underlines that symptoms of insomnia, anxiety and depression may be linked to Facebook dependence in combination with other factors such as sex, extroversion, low self-esteem, neuroticism and time spent online. Today it is not clear whether the SNS increase psychological problems or wether young people try to overcome their loneliness through Internet and its net; Therefore, I think that social network addiction should not be overlooked because it is an alarm bell deserving a deeper analisysÈ consentito all'utente scaricare e condividere i documenti disponibili a testo pieno in UNITESI UNIPV nel rispetto della licenza Creative Commons del tipo CC BY NC ND.
