This thesis aims at analysing the Zan bill and its parliamentary process from its discussion at the Chamber of Deputies to its sinking by means of the so-called “tagliola” (trap). The purpose of this study is to identify and delineate the linguistic choices of political exponents representing different currents of thought and to define the communicative patterns used to persuade the electorate accordingly. The first part of the thesis focuses on homophobia in Italy and on the attempts to curb this phenomenon at legislative level with national and regional bills. The central part of this study consists of a qualitative analysis based on a dataset, provided by the Pavia Observatory. The sample is composed of of 86 politicians as well as of their 748 tweets on the matter. The analysis is not developed merely along a chronological perspective. Rather, through a dedicated software - Iramuteq - it attempts to identify lexical choices and communicative methods used by politicians of different parties. The last part of the thesis is focused on the collection of polls and data on the support for the bill and the examination of the various positions found and how these impacted public opinion.
