The enabling technologies of Industry 4.0 are catching on extremely fast in the modern digital era, redefining production and market logics with great innovation. This thesis aims to investigate the impact that three of the most powerful smart technologies, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, have in the optical-ophthalmic sector, with reference to EssilorLuxottica's progress story. Big Data Analytics are now driving the development of most social sectors, as they are able to generate value from billions of heterogeneous pieces of information in a quick and accurate way. These huge volumes of digital data feed the most complex Artificial Intelligence systems on a daily basis and allow its main branch, Machine Learning, constant autonomous learning. This is particularly advantageous in the optical-ophthalmic sector, because it enables the creation of new products and tools for diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The main innovations proposed by EssilorLuxottica, a key player in optics and ophthalmology and a leading research and development company in the field, were analysed in depth, demonstrating the progress achieved through the integration of these smart technologies. The company's new proposals, compared with those of its main competitors, reflect the current direction of this market, which is increasingly connected to other sectors related to health and personal well-being. The study, carried out through a detailed analysis of existing literature and topical articles, revealed anticipations and predictions of future developments that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning will enable in such a sensitive and important sector, based on a constant and ethical data collection.
Le tecnologie abilitanti dell’Industria 4.0 stanno prendendo piede con estrema rapidità nella digital era moderna, ridefinendo le logiche produttive e di mercato con grande innovazione. La presente disamina si propone di indagare l’impatto che tre delle smart technologies più potenti, i Big Data, l’Intelligenza Artificiale e il Machine Learning, hanno nel settore ottico-oftalmico, con riferimento alla storia di progresso di EssilorLuxottica. I Big Data Analytics sono oggi alla base dello sviluppo di gran parte dei settori sociali, poiché riescono a generare valore da miliardi di informazioni eterogenee in maniera rapida e accurata. Questi enormi volumi di dati digitali alimentano quotidianamente i sistemi più complessi di Intelligenza Artificiale e consentono alla sua branca principale, il Machine Learning, un apprendimento autonomo costante. Ciò si rivela particolarmente vantaggioso nel settore ottico-oftalmico, poiché permette la creazione di nuovi prodotti e strumenti per la diagnosi, prevenzione e cura. Sono state approfondite le principali innovazioni proposte da EssilorLuxottica, player chiave in ottica e oftalmologia e in prima posizione per la ricerca e sviluppo del settore, a riprova dei progressi raggiunti grazie all’integrazione di queste tecnologie intelligenti. Le nuove proposte aziendali, comparate con quelle dei principali competitors, riflettono la direzione attuale di questo mercato, sempre più connesso ad altri settori legati alla salute e al benessere personale. Dallo studio, svolto tramite una dettagliata analisi della letteratura esistente e di articoli di attualità, sono emerse anticipazioni e previsioni degli sviluppi futuri che Intelligenza Artificiale e Machine Learning permetteranno in un settore così sensibile e importante, sulla base di una costante ed etica raccolta dati.
