This training study aims to investigate how mental training techniques can affect an athlethe’s well-being and, subsequently, the athlete’s performance. Although mental training, over the past decade, has seen a sharp increase in its use, there is still little general knowledge regarding the topic and, most importantly, there is lack of evidence regarding its long-term impact in psychological well-being. The study involved 66 athletes, divided into two groups, one of which underwent group training with self-empowerment, relaxation and visualization techniques for 3 weeks. The result didn’t show a significant reduction in the examined variables in the group that followed the mental training program compared to the control group. However, the analysis revealed a significant effect of age on the Cognitive Behavioural Assessment (CBA) scores, suggesting that psychological well-being may with age, regardless of the intervention. These results indicate that, although no effects of the mental training intervention were found, age may be a factor to consider in the future reaserch on the management of psychological well-being in the sports field.
Questo studio di training ha lo scopo di indagare come le tecniche di mental training possano influire sul benessere dell’atleta e, successivamente, sulla performance dello stesso. Nonostante il mental training, negli ultimi dieci anni, abbia avuto un forte incremento nel suo impiego, ancora scarsa è la conoscenza generale riguardo all’argomento e, soprattutto, mancano evidenze riguardo al suo impatto a lungo termine sul benessere psicologico. Lo studio ha coinvolto 66 atleti, suddivisi in due gruppi, di cui uno sottoposto per 3 settimane ad un training di gruppo con tecniche di self-empowerment, rilassamento e visualizzazione. I risultati non hanno evidenziato una riduzione significativa delle variabili esaminate nel gruppo che ha seguito il programma di mental training rispetto al gruppo di controllo. Tuttavia, l’analisi ha rilevato un effetto significativo dell’età sui punteggi del Cognitive Behavioural Assessment (CBA) suggerendo che il benessere psicologico potrebbe variare in funzione dell’età indipendentemente dall’intervento. Questi risultati indicano che, pur non avendo trovato effetti dell’intervento di mental training, l’età può essere un fattore da considerare nelle future ricerche sulla gestione del benessere psicologico in ambito sportivo.
