The subject of this thesis is the social network TikTok and its influence on the music market and industry. The primary objectives of this research are: to understand how internal dynamics within the industry have changed since the platform has taken over the global market; to examine how musical artists have integrated the use of this platform into the promotion of their careers, as well as whether it has influenced their creative processes. The first chapter begins with a historical overview aimed at understanding the origins of what we now define as the music industry, and how it has evolved over the decades, with particular focus on the digital revolution of the new millennium. The second chapter introduces social media and their initial impact on the music industry, then moves on how the social network TikTok was born, analyzing its history, expansion, and main features. The third chapter offers an analysis of the close relationship between the platform and music. Then reviews TikTok’s influence on the music market and industry, both from a statistical perspective and by observing new internal dynamics, supported by the insights of an industry professional, interviewed to provide a concrete and practical viewpoint. The fourth and final chapter explores how TikTok can impact an artist's career or the popularity of a single track. Several case studies are analyzed, and an interview with an artist whose career was profoundly reshaped by TikTok is presented to better understand the platform's influence and how it may have affected their professional approach to music.
L’oggetto di studio di questa tesi è il social network TikTok e la sua influenza nel mercato e l’industria musicale. Gli obiettivi principali di questa ricerca sono: capire quanto siano cambiate le dinamiche interne all’industria da quando la piattaforma ha conquistato il mercato globale e come le aziende si sono dovute adattare; comprendere come gli artisti musicali abbiano dovuto adattarsi ad utilizzare questa piattaforma nella promozione della propria carriera e se questa ha influenzato i loro processi creativi musicali. Si parte nel primo capitolo da una panoramica storica per apprendere come è nata quella che oggi identifichiamo come industria musicale e quali sono state le sue evoluzioni nei decenni, con particolare attenzione alla rivoluzione digitale del nuovo millennio. Nel secondo capitolo si introducono i social media e il loro primo impatto sull’industria musicale, per poi soffermarsi su come sia nato il social network TikTok, analizzando la sua storia, la sua espansione e le sue principali caratteristiche. Nel terzo capitolo si parte da un’analisi dello stretto rapporto tra la piattaforma e la musica. Successivamente si osserva l’influenza sul mercato e l’industria musicale, sia da un punto di vista statistico, sia osservando le nuove dinamiche interne, anche grazie al contributo di un attore interno a queste dinamiche, intervistato per avere un punto di vista concreto. Nel quarto e ultimo capitolo si passa ad osservare quali siano le principali dinamiche che TikTok può generare per influenzare la carriera di un artista o la popolarità di un singolo brano. Si osservano diversi casi studio e, anche in questo caso, si riporta un’intervista ad un artista che ha subito in prima persona lo stravolgimento della sua carriera grazie a TikTok, per capirne le dinamiche e quanto possa aver influenzato il suo modo di approcciarsi alla professione musicale.
