"LA VOCE DEI SOLDATI ITALIANI: LETTERE NELL’ESERCITO AUSTRIACO IN LOMBARDIA"

This thesis examines the condition of Italian soldiers enlisted in the Austrian army during the 18th century, focusing on Lombardy under Habsburg rule. Through the analysis of letters and military correspondence, it uncovers the often-overlooked voices of soldiers, shedding light on their daily hardships, appeals for justice, emotional bonds, and the tensions between military power and civil society. The study reconstructs the institutional and military framework of the Habsburg Empire, exploring the composition of the army in Italian territories, the organization of garrisons, and the evolution of local administrative structures. The goal is to bring forth the individual and collective experiences of the lower social classes, offering a bottom-up perspective on imperial governance and on dynamics of marginalization, merit, suffering, and resistance. Through their letters, soldiers write in order to exist—a written testimony of dignity and the human need to be recognized within the imperial machinery.

Questa tesi analizza la condizione dei soldati italiani arruolati nell’esercito austriaco durante il XVIII secolo, con particolare riferimento al contesto della Lombardia sotto il dominio asburgico. Attraverso lo studio di lettere e documenti epistolari, emerge la voce dei soldati – spesso ignorata dalla storiografia tradizionale – che racconta le difficoltà quotidiane, le richieste di giustizia, le relazioni affettive e le tensioni tra potere militare e società civile. Il lavoro ricostruisce il quadro istituzionale e militare dell’Impero Asburgico, approfondendo la composizione dell’esercito nei territori italiani, l’organizzazione delle guarnigioni, e l’evoluzione delle strutture amministrative locali. L’obiettivo è far emergere le esperienze individuali e collettive dei ceti subalterni, offrendo una prospettiva dal basso sulla gestione dell’Impero e sulle dinamiche di marginalità, merito, sofferenza e resistenza. Attraverso le lettere, i soldati scrivono per esistere: una testimonianza scritta di dignità e di rivendicazione di spazio umano nella macchina imperiale.
