Graffiti, stickers and anti-graffiti policy: a linguistic landscape comparison of two Stockholm neighbourhoods

This thesis examines differences in the informal linguistic landscapes of two Stockholm district areas, Södermalm and Järva. The focus is on graffiti, stickers, and the influence of the Stockholm anti-graffiti regime. The findings indicate that both areas display a general scarcity of graffiti and stickers, pattern that is particularly evident in Järva. As a consequence, the graffiti and stickers documented in Järva present lower levels of linguistic, thematic, and structural variation than those recorded in Södermalm. Linguistic diversity is also overall limited, as Swedish and English predominate in both areas. The study highlights the impact of the Stockholm anti-graffiti regime on the informal linguistic landscape of the city. The strict policy contributes to the overall scarcity of graffiti but also to the widespread presence of traces left by erased graffiti. Additionally, the regime appears to influence the spatial distribution of graffiti, which tends to cluster in areas that offer increased anonymity or reduced removal practices. Overall, the findings highlight significant quantitative and qualitative differences between Södermalm and Järva. Södermalm presents a comparatively richer and more varied informal linguistic landscape, while Järva presents a more limited and less diverse range of graffiti and stickers. La presente tesi esamina le differenze nei paesaggi linguistici informali di due aree di Stoccolma, Södermalm e Järva. L’analisi si concentra su graffiti, sticker, e sull’influenza del regime anti-graffiti di Stoccolma. I risultati indicano che entrambe le aree presentano una generale scarsità di graffiti e sticker, fenomeno particolarmente evidente nell’area di Järva. Conseguentemente, i graffiti e sticker documentati a Järva mostrano livelli inferiori di variazione linguistica, tematica e strutturale rispetto a quelli registrati a Södermalm. In entrambe le aree predominano lo svedese e l’inglese, e la diversità linguistica complessiva risulta limitata. Lo studio evidenzia inoltre l’impatto del regime anti-graffiti di Stoccolma sul paesaggio linguistico informale della città. Le conseguenze di questa politica includono la generalizzata scarsità di graffiti e la diffusa presenza di tracce lasciate dalla loro rimozione. Inoltre, il regime sembra influenzare la distribuzione spaziale dei graffiti, che tendono a concentrarsi in aree che offrono maggiore anonimato o dove le pratiche di rimozione sono meno frequenti. In conclusione, i risultati evidenziano significative differenze quantitative e qualitative tra Södermalm e Järva. Södermalm presenta un paesaggio linguistico informale relativamente più ricco e differenziato, mentre Järva presenta una quantità inferiore di graffiti e sticker che risultano essere meno diversificati.
