LO STORYTELLING NELLA COMUNICAZIONE CONTEMPORANEA: un’analisi teorica e comparativa tra medium freddi e caldi

This thesis explores storytelling through the comparison of three works from different media: Guernica (1937) by Pablo Picasso, Rhythm 0 (1974) by Marina Abramović, and The Truman Show (1998) directed by Peter Weir. The aim is to examine whether archetypal structures and narrative models, derived from Jung’s psychologies theories, Campbell’s studies, and the theories of Vogler and Snyder, can be effectively applied to different expressive languages. The study also incorporates McLuhan’s theory in order to assess the role of the medium and its impact on audience engagement. The research analyzes how storytelling manifests itself in symbolic, performative, and narrative forms, activating perceptual, cognitive, and emotional processes. Finally, the analysis emphasizes both the strengths and the limitations of the theoretical frameworks employed in comparing different artistic media.

Questa tesi esplora lo storytelling confrontando tre opere di media diversi: Guernica (1937) di Pablo Picasso, Rhythm 0 (1974) di Marina Abramović e The Truman Show (1998) di Peter Weir. Lo scopo è capire se strutture archetipiche e modelli narrativi, che derivano dalla psicologia di Jung, dal monomito di Campbell e dalle teorie di Vogler e Snyder, siano applicabili a linguaggi espressivi differenti. La ricerca include anche la teoria di McLuhan per valutare il ruolo del medium e come coinvolge il pubblico. Attraverso un approccio intermediale, viene analizzato in che modo lo storytelling si manifesta in forme simboliche, performative e narrative attivando processi percettivi, cognitivi ed emotivi. I risultati mostrano l’esistenza di strutture trasformative comuni tra le diverse modalità espressive, confermando che lo storytelling svolge una funzione centrale nell’organizzazione dell’esperienza estetica. Infine, l’analisi sottolinea sia i punti di forza che i limiti degli strumenti teorici usati per confrontare mezzi artistici diversi.
