By examining the skyscraper not just as a representation of economic might and advancement but also as a possible model for sustainability and urban renewal, this thesis delves into the architectural, cultural, and technological significance of vertical construction. The study starts with a historical overview that covers the development of the skyscraper's design language and its effects on cities and societies, starting with ancient vertical structures like Mesopotamian ziggurats, Egyptian pyramids and Islamic minarets and ending with today's technologically sophisticated towers. Three main issues form the framework of the study has been analysed: the sociocultural and symbolic aspects of tall structures, the structural and functional approaches that support their growth, and the sustainable measures meant to lessen their environmental impact. The role of dynamic and kinetic façades as creative solutions for energy efficiency and climate adaptation is highlighted in particular, showing how these systems—which are frequently influenced by biomimicry and traditional Islamic architecture, like the mashrabiya—allow buildings to react sensibly to environmental changes outside. By examining important case studies, such as the Shanghai Tower in China and the Al Bahar Towers in Abu Dhabi, the thesis shows how combining cutting-edge technologies, bioclimatic techniques and traditional design elements can create architecture that is not only recognizable but also effective and durable. The practical outcome of this research is an architectural design proposal for a multifunctional eco-tower located in Casablanca Finance City. This project synthesizes the theoretical findings, combining environmental sustainability, flexible programming and references to Arab-Islamic architectural heritage to propose a new model for vertical living and working. Ultimately, the thesis aims to redefine verticality in architecture not simply as a response to urban density or a quest for symbolic height, but as an opportunity to promote energy efficiency, user well-being, and social inclusiveness. In doing so, it positions the skyscraper as a key architectural typology for addressing the environmental and societal challenges of the 21st century.
Attraverso l’analisi del grattacielo non soltanto come rappresentazione della potenza economica e del progresso, ma anche come possibile modello di sostenibilità e rigenerazione urbana, la presente tesi approfondisce il significato architettonico, culturale e tecnologico della costruzione verticale. Lo studio prende avvio da una ricostruzione storica che considera l’evoluzione del linguaggio progettuale del grattacielo e i suoi effetti sulle città e sulle società, a partire da antiche strutture verticali quali le ziggurat mesopotamiche, le piramidi egizie e i minareti islamici, fino alle torri tecnologicamente avanzate dell’epoca contemporanea. La ricerca si articola attorno a tre principali ambiti di indagine: gli aspetti socioculturali e simbolici delle strutture alte; gli approcci strutturali e funzionali che ne hanno sostenuto lo sviluppo; e le strategie sostenibili finalizzate alla riduzione del loro impatto ambientale. Particolare attenzione è dedicata al ruolo delle facciate dinamiche e cinetiche come soluzioni innovative per l’efficienza energetica e l’adattamento climatico. Tali sistemi, spesso influenzati dalla biomimetica e dall’architettura islamica tradizionale, come nel caso della mashrabiya, consentono agli edifici di rispondere in modo intelligente alle variazioni delle condizioni ambientali esterne. Attraverso l’esame di casi studio significativi, quali la Shanghai Tower in Cina e le Al Bahar Towers ad Abu Dhabi, la tesi evidenzia come l’integrazione tra tecnologie avanzate, strategie bioclimatiche ed elementi progettuali della tradizione possa generare un’architettura non solo riconoscibile, ma anche efficiente, resiliente e durevole. L’esito applicativo della ricerca consiste in una proposta progettuale architettonica per una eco-torre multifunzionale situata nella Casablanca Finance City. Il progetto sintetizza i risultati teorici dell’indagine, combinando sostenibilità ambientale, flessibilità funzionale e riferimenti al patrimonio architettonico arabo-islamico, al fine di proporre un nuovo modello di abitare e lavorare in verticale. In ultima analisi, la tesi mira a ridefinire la verticalità in architettura non semplicemente come risposta alla densità urbana o come ricerca di altezza simbolica, ma come opportunità per promuovere l’efficienza energetica, il benessere degli utenti e l’inclusione sociale. In tal senso, il grattacielo viene interpretato come una tipologia architettonica chiave per affrontare le sfide ambientali e sociali del XXI secolo.
