In both practical and empirical capital market research, the beta factor is typically estimated for future periods using OLS regression on historical data. However, these betas are neither reliable for forecasting dynamic portfolio performance nor for achieving statistical accuracy. Therefore, methods have been developed to improve the stability of beta estimates and to adjust historical beta estimates. The aim of this study is to examine the extent to which forecast accuracy and portfolio performance, based on raw beta, can be improved by using the Blume and Vasicek beta. For this purpose, an empirical analysis is conducted based on the full sample of stocks in the S&P 500 index. Over the entire sample period, it can be observed that although both Vasicek and Blume adjustment methods tend to improve statistical accuracy compared to raw beta, adjustment methods do not improve portfolio performance. Analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic period shows that statistical forecast accuracy is lower for all methods compared to the entire sample period, and that adjustment methods still perform better than raw beta. During the initial phase of COVID-19 period, portfolio cumulative returns and Sharpe ratio decreased for all methods relative to the overall period, with the Vasicek adjustment outperforming raw beta. However, after the initial stage of the COVID-19 period, adjustment methods are unable to perform better than raw beta. Overall, while beta adjustment methods improve statistical accuracy, adjustment methods do not improve portfolio performance relative to raw beta.

Abstract
Overall, while beta adjustment methods improve statistical accuracy, adjustment methods do not improve portfolio performance relative to raw beta.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
