In recent years, neuroscientific research has amply demonstrated that the cerebellum is not merely a center for motor coordination but actively participates in the modulation of cognitive and socio-affective functions through extensive projections to the cerebral cortex. The present study investigates the causal role of cerebellocortical synchronization in the processing of facial emotional expressions using dual-site transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Thirty-six healthy participants underwent tACS at an individual gamma frequency (IGF) applied to the right superior temporal sulcus (STS) and the left paramedial cerebellum, in in-phase (0°), anti-phase (180°) and sham modes, whilst performing an emotional discrimination task and two control tasks (i.e., gender and object discrimination). The results showed that anti-phase stimulation between the two regions impaired performance solely in the emotional discrimination task, compared with both sham stimulation and in-phase stimulation. The same stimulation did not interfere with performance in the control tasks. These findings confirm that oscillatory phase coherence between the cerebellum and superior temporal areas plays a causal and specific role in emotional processing, opening new perspectives for the application of NIBS techniques in the study of networks involved in cognitive processes.

Abstract
These findings confirm that oscillatory phase coherence between the cerebellum and superior temporal areas plays a causal and specific role in emotional processing, opening new perspectives for the application of NIBS techniques in the study of networks involved in cognitive processes.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
