Think about the purchases you have made throughout your life. How many of these were truly necessary? How many of the products or services you bought turned out to be a mistake, to the detriment of a competitor or a similar, even more advantageous product? The question therefore arises: do we choose what to buy, or is it the way in which products and services are presented that influences us? This analysis will provide answers to each of these questions. Broadly speaking, the analysis will be structured into five chapters. It will begin with a discussion of how the human mind works, before moving on to the broad topic of persuasion, distinguishing it from digital manipulation, and – finally – concluding with a quantitative and qualitative field analysis. We began with the field of neuroscience, in order to understand how our minds work and what mechanisms they employ, before moving on to the fields of gamification and digital manipulation. We rounded off the overview with a practical field study conducted via a survey. The results highlighted just how much ethical design is, today, a key factor in the purchasing decision-making process.
