This thesis reconstructs the historical and mathematical path that led to the birth of hyperbolic geometry, with particular attention to the contributions of scholars connected with the University of Pavia, including Giovanni Girolamo Saccheri, Eugenio Beltrami, and Luigi Bianchi. Through an analysis of the attempts to prove Euclid’s Fifth Postulate and of the development of non-Euclidean geometries, it shows how hyperbolic geometry emerged as a new and consistent conception of space. The thesis also examines the role played by mathematical models between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing on the models preserved in the Collection of the University of Pavia. In doing so, it highlights how the evolution of geometric ideas was supported by the continuous interaction between theoretical development and geometric intuition.

Abstract
In doing so, it highlights how the evolution of geometric ideas was supported by the continuous interaction between theoretical development and geometric intuition.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
