This thesis examines the relationship between media and public opinion, with particular attention to the Turkish context and the transformations brought about by the growing diffusion of digital media and social media. Drawing on the main theories of media influence, including agenda-setting, priming, framing, and the spiral of silence, the study explores how the media contribute to the selection and interpretation of information and, consequently, to the formation of public opinion. The analysis also considers some dynamics specific to the digital environment, such as the role of algorithms, echo chambers, disinformation, and emerging issues related to artificial intelligence. The empirical part focuses on Turkey and adopts a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with participants belonging to Generations X, Y, and Z. The research examines their information consumption habits, the relationship between traditional and digital media, trust in information sources, the strategies used to verify information, and perceptions of the influence exerted by social media. The findings reveal a gradual shift towards digital platforms and a growing awareness of the risks associated with disinformation, algorithms, and AI-generated content. At the same time, no clear-cut differences emerge among the three generations: the participants’ experiences show that generational belonging represents a significant, but not sufficient, factor in explaining different patterns of media use and perception. Overall, the research highlights the complexity of public opinion formation within the current Turkish media and social context.
