This thesis examines the relationship between contemporary art and social polarization, understood as the process through which opinions, values and identities tend to concentrate at the extremes of an ideological or cultural spectrum, reducing the space for dialogue and compromise. After outlining, in the first chapter, the theoretical framework - drawing on studies of political and media polarization and on Chantal Mouffe, Jacques Rancière and Claire Bishop's reflections on the relationship between art and politics - the research analyses eight case studies of contemporary artists who explicitly address migration, political conflict, historical memory and social inequality: Ai Weiwei, JR, Banksy, Tania Bruguera, Kara Walker, Santiago Sierra and Alfredo Jaar. A dedicated chapter broadens the perspective to the North African and Middle Eastern context, through the work of Walid Ardhaoui and Saher Nassar. The thesis shows that contemporary art, regardless of geographical context or visual language, actively intervenes in the public sphere, contributing ambivalently both to creating spaces of dialogue and visibility for social conflicts and, in some cases, to reinforcing the very divisions it seeks to represent
